Creative genograms, on the other hand, enable families to phenomenologically self-define recurring themes and issues, combining both historical and experiential data in one visual representation.

However, there are also challenges associated with using creative genograms, such as unfamiliarity with art language and fear of being 'diagnosed' through art. To overcome these barriers, it is essential for social workers to understand the theoretical underpinnings of social versus psychological art.
